[ Home > SCULPTURES > WOOD SCULPTURES ]
There are many types of wood used in carving sculptures. Hardwoods are more difficult to shape but have greater luster and longevity. Softer woods may be easier to carve but are more prone to damage. Any wood can be carved but they all have different qualities and characteristics. The most expensive woods include Sandalwood, Ebony, Pink Ivory, Dalbergia (Rosewood), African Bubinga and Bocate. It is not common to use Bocata in carvings. Ebony and Sandalwood, often preferred, are more rare today and subsequently not used often. Ebony wood is prized for its strength and color. Sandalwood is a class of woods from trees in the genus Santalum. The woods are heavy, yellow, and fine-grained, and unlike many other aromatic woods, they retain their fragrance for decades.
