Caring for Your Sterling Silver Jewelry

Sterling silver can be used to create some mesmerizing and classic pieces of jewelry! However, if not cared for regularly, it can tarnish. What does this mean for you, the jewelry owner? Fear not, by following a few simple steps, you can keep your sterling silver jewelry shining!

Tarnishing occurs through exposure to oxygen, however high humidity, air pollution, and contact chemicals found in many every day chemicals (deodorant, hairspray, body lotion, perfume, etc) can contribute to tarnishing.

So what can you do to keep your jewelry ready to wear?

1.Each piece should be stored separately; multiple pieces stored together can bump into one another and cause scratches. There are several options to storing your sterling silver jewelry. Your sterling silver could be stored in plastic bags but be sure excess air is squeezed out of the bag before sealing. You can also consider storing your jewelry in specialized anti-tarnish bags to help prevent tarnishing.

2.Keep your sterling silver jewelry in a cool and dry area out of sunlight. If you keep your sterling silver jewelry on wood or other chemically treated surfaces, these chemicals can speed up the tarnishing process too.

3.Consider adding a piece of chalk or silica packs (often found in new shoes) in your jewelry box or jewelry bag, as that can absorb moisture. Anti-tarnish strips also absorb agents in the air that can contribute to tarnishing sterling silver.

Is your silver already tarnished?

1. Clean it with a polishing cloth made for silver.

2. If the tarnish needs more than a cloth to remove, consider a silver wash or cleaner.

3. Or you can visit a jeweler who has special equipment to clean your sterling silver.

Do not use baking soda or toothpaste. These methods are too abrasive to safely clean your sterling silver jewelry.
