Pantone’s Color of the Year

“The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today.” – Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute.

Pantone awards a new representative hue with the title of “Color of the Year” every December. Last year was a revitalizing and refreshing shade of yellow-green called Greenery 15-0343. This year, Pantone has dubbed Ultra Violet 18-3838 the 2018 color of the year. It’s said that ultra violet “communicates ingenuity, originality, and visionary thinking pushing us to the future.”

Historically, this mystical color was associated with mindfulness practices and is being still used as a tone of lighting when practicing meditation; helping you retreat from everyday stresses. Musical legends like David Bowie, Prince, and Jimi Hendrix continuously brought shades of purple to the forefront of western pop culture to express their individuality. It has been said that this galactic shade of purple symbolizes non-conformity and experimentation, urging all to push their boundaries using creative outlets.

Pantone’s executive director Leatrice Eiseman made a statement that resonated with us: “From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive ultra violet lights the way to what is yet to come”.

Ultra violet 18-3838 helps to remind us to inspire and create; to stay imaginative and conscious while the rest of the world becomes engulfed in meaningless energies. What do you think next years “Color of the Year” will symbolize?
